Kylie Minogue in Amsterdam (Aphrodite Les Folies Tour)
There aren't many new artists with the class, style and energy creating a full stage show for a world tour. Most of the time it's done by the older, mature artists. The little lady talked about here released her latest album "Aphrodite" in July 2010 and the Showgirl went back on the road some months later. Last night she performed at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam.
The audience got exactly what they wanted from (the creative team of) the Australian superstar.
A set which was inspired by Greek history and old storytelling with the most theatrical, themed and stylish Dolce & Gabbana costumes specially made for her pop concerts, sexy and muscular dancers / acrobats, stunning projected visuals and colourful lighting, a fountain ballet during the two song encore, a four man band (bass, lead / rhythm guitar, keyboards / synthesizers and drums) producing a maximum of sound and of course Aphrodite herself: Kylie Minogue.
This Aphrodite-Les Folies Tour has a more totally directed feel. Sure, the songs were well perfomed and sounded wonderful (Minogue is still a very good live singer!), but you could sense that, compared to the Fever and Showgirl tour, this time the focus was mainly on the music and less on the element of show. A flying angel with miss Minogue on his back and the fountain ballet during the encores are spectacular and a high-tech work of art, but in general the show was a more toned down kind of thing.
The music was not toned down at all. Miss Minogue only sang one ballad, "If You Don't Love Me," hitting those high notes perfectly and an a capella short version of "Got To Be Certain" while the other twenty three songs were the disco driven upbeat songs she's so famous for. You couldn't stand still if you wanted to. A great pick of songs from her twenty four year old career including the latest hits "All The Lovers," "Get Outta My Way" and even a cover, Eurythmics' "There Must Be An Angel." The four man band sometimes sounded like four dance deejays and Kylie's voice was very clear throughout the whole show.
It was a bit weird seeing such a huge stage in a concert hall. It also felt intimate at the same time. Kylie described that herself. Normally a big production like this would be done in an arena or open air. The Dutch are know to be good party people though and it sure was one hell of a party last night!
